Testimonial Snorry open planar headphones

Feedback from Sergey from Volgograd on the open isodynamic headphones Snorry

Received the headphones, listened to them, ready to give some feedback. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the information presented on the official website and in this thread. I hope this material will help those who haven’t done it yet to make up their minds. I was able to directly compare, though not for a long time, with Audeze LCD-2.

Volgograd, if anyone wants to listen to the headphones, you can beep in person, the next half a year (from the date of publication) I am definitely here. Offer a comparison, listening to your equipment, it is worth trying lamps.

This is the basic SI-1 model with mahogany cups, without any of my custom modifications. The wire is complete.

Comfort and aesthetics

In spite of my large head, the headphones fit perfectly on it, the weight is not felt, in comparison with Audeze LCD-2 and even a fluffy, in SI-1 you can sit indefinitely. The headband is very nice and soft. The ear is in near-ideal conditions. Despite the very high quality fit of the ear cushions, nothing sweats. My ears, also quite large, fit comfortably in them.

There is a small margin of 50mm outreach from the full range in 5mm increments. The pressure is exactly such that the headphones do not dangle with a fairly intense headwind and at the same time do not press too hard, a consequence of the low mass. The protrusion in my version is adjustable with a 2mm allen key. When fully tightened, this system can only move by destructive action. We will not check it, of course. The mechanism is reliable, certainly better than the one on LCD-2 where the cups have a bad feature to fall out without warning at an excessive release, which is very easy to let, taking into account the weight of the cup.

The appearance in general and the materials in particular do not leave anyone in doubt about the level of the product, the thing stands out and attracts attention.

As for the fine workmanship, my copy is well finished. If you want, you can feel a little sharp edges on the edges, but in the end it does not affect the sound, comfort and appearance. There are no problems noticeable to the naked eye, unless you sit and look for them purposefully with a magnifying glass.

In terms of choice of source I don’t belong to the ranks of reference audiophiles, so the source this time is the old E-MU 1616m with a little modification – the operational amplifier from NJM2114 to OPA1612 was replaced. In general, it’s a separate topic about what you can do with this E-MU. The output resistance of this output is 20 ohms. The PSU of the machine to which the PCE-e interface E-MU is connected is Thermaltake Toughpower 650w Gold.

Software and formats

The material was listened in 16/44 mode on mp3 320 kbit/s and FLAC/ALAC converted from official CDs. Different players were used, Foobar v1.3.16 via ASIO for FLAC/ALAC and AIMP 4.12 build 1880 for MP3 with default settings. Also listened from Yandex Music service (hereinafter – YM). browser Chrome 71.0.3578.98 at the time of writing this material. Since listening to everything from everything is not enough for several lifetimes, I will give some notable and specific works, which are quite famous or have some features that would be interesting to hear in any system. Mostly listened in the evening after work (tiredness), Vrms = 0.8±0.1 V, those who want can estimate SPL.

In order to understand the sound of the headphones, a pool of albums or compilations, somehow noteworthy and worthy of attention, was selected. The reason for inclusion in the list is given in brackets. The general impressions will be presented below, I did not describe each item in detail – a lot of space.

  • Almanac – Tsar FLAC (Guitar and composition)
  • Danheim – Munarvagr YM (Natural Quiet Sound)
  • Gesaffelstein – Aleph FLAC (Synthesizer)
  • Konstantin Stupin – Acoustic Live FLAC (Vocal and guitar)
  • Korn – See You On The Other Side YM (Specific sound)
  • Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra YM (Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Shchedrin, Rachmaninoff)
  • In This Moment – Black Widow FLAC (Female Scream)
  • Septem Voices – Sorcery FLAC (Genre Mix)
  • System of A Down – Toxicity YM (Milestone)
  • Skindred – Big Tings YM (Genre Mix)
  • Teddy Killerz – Nightmare Street AIMP (Aggressive synth)
  • Zaz – Effet Miroir YM (Vocals)

The headphones, regardless of the piece, contribute virtually no coloration, while easily immersing you in the piece, easily revealing the creative intent, all at any volume. Overall, they rock a little harder than the LCD-2. Extremely neutral and weighted sound everywhere, including the high frequencies, it gives a sense of airiness, freedom. Thus, the listening experience depends more on the recording itself and the work of the sound engineers and musicians. Of particular importance is the choice of quality music as such, so that there are no critical errors in all stages from performance on the instrument to coding. With that kind of detail, you won’t miss a beat. I’m not much versed in whether or not I can speak for sound engineers, but the headphones, due to their linearity, look like a great option for them.

I would like to mention especially the synthesized sound. Due to the linearity and high detail, all the works using the synthesizer definitely give a new sensation. Even the LCD-2, due to the problems with AFC and distortion in the area of 3-4 kHz, cannot reveal this sound so vividly, unusually, to give a completely new sensation.

I strongly recommend using lossless compression if possible, as it gives noticeable compression artifacts in the high dynamic range. It shows up at high frequencies. Although if your ears do not already pull above 16 kHz, it is not so critical.

In video games the headphones showed themselves in the highest way – you can hear everything, everywhere and far away.

Short comparison with Audeze LCD-2

In spite of my short experience with LCD-2, I heard the difference perfectly. In general, the main problem with the Duals lies in the design itself. The enormous magnets overlapping the diaphragm area make it useless. The phasers there are nothing but a crutch in an untechnological magnet system, stifling the sound completely. Because of this, compared to the SI-1, it feels like the sound is going through some kind of felt tube, muffling at some frequencies and introducing debris there.

Nothing like that with the SI-1. Their sound does not change dramatically even if you lift the cups from your ears. Stable equal volume curves, you can listen at any volume. Technical execution and thoughtfulness can be rated at the highest grade, and if you consider the factor of piece production, lack of laboratories and staff, prices, it all supersedes the result for all possible scales of evaluation. It’s hard to imagine anything more suitable for home use. Certainly not the heavy LCD-2s you could kill a cat with if dropped on it.

To summarize, it can only be said that this is the most folk-quality sound you can find. The truly stunning work on the technology, professionalism and perspective of the author of this work of electroacoustic art makes the headphones a milestone without exaggeration.

P.S. No cats were harmed as a result of writing the review.
